Surprise in the Fishbowl, A Lesson in Trusting the Process

Today’s session in my neurodiversity coaching program took an unexpected turn.

I walked in thinking I’d be mentor coaching, observing one of the cohort members and offering feedback. Instead, I was asked to coach live in a fishbowl setting with everyone watching.

My first reaction?
Oh… okay. Deep breath.

I hadn’t coached in front of a group since preparing for my PCC certification back in 2022. I could feel the nerves rise but I reminded myself this is part of the journey. I said yes. I grounded myself in one intention, be fully present and just coach.

What helped me stay centered was something I often teach others. Structure brings freedom. I leaned into the 5-stage coaching model I teach to managers, which is based on Coach U’s Coaching Conversation Model. I also drew confidence from my weekly mentor coaching practice where I regularly observe and offer feedback on coaching skills, especially around powerful questioning and session flow.

And you know what?

I loved it.
The session flew by and afterward, the feedback from both the instructor and my classmates was full of encouragement, warmth, and affirmation. It wasn’t just a relief, it was a genuine confidence boost.

Moments like this remind me how much I love being both a coach and a mentor. It’s such a gift to support others’ growth and stretch myself in the process.

Key takeaway
Even when things don’t go as expected, you can still show up fully. Trust the process. Let your training support you. And don’t forget to enjoy the moment.

Have you ever been unexpectedly put in the spotlight? How did you respond? I’d love to hear your story.
